Energy Levels Q & A

What are the signs of low energy levels?

When you have low energy, you definitely feel it from head to toe. But if you lose energy gradually, which is very common in both men and women, the symptoms of low energy levels may not be as obvious. Here are a few signs that your energy levels aren't as high as they should be.

  • Feeling drained without major physical activity
  • Feeling tired even after sleeping all night
  • Running out of energy in the middle of the day
  • Lacking the motivation to participate in things you usually enjoy
  • Feeling sluggish and disconnected from what's going on around you

It's perfectly normal to have less energy than usual on occasion or even feel totally worn out from time to time. But if you have low energy on a daily basis, it's time to see Dr. Riegel to find out why.

What causes low energy levels?

In many cases, low energy levels occur when your hormone levels change as you age. There are several hormones that play a big role in energy levels.

Thyroid hormone

Your thyroid makes a hormone, thyroxin, that increases your metabolic rate. A thyroxin deficiency can lead to poor energy levels, as well as issues like weight gain, memory lapses, hair loss, and depression. An excess of thyroxin can cause the opposite issues, making you feel jittery, anxious, and restless.

Sleep hormones

The two main hormones involved in sleep management, melatonin, and cortisol, can limit your nighttime sleep when they’re out of balance. This can contribute to poor energy levels, including sudden energy drops and all-day tiredness, during the day.

Other hormones can play a role in energy levels as well. The sex hormones, including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, affect your entire body. Too little of these hormones can cause not only tiredness but also weight gain, hair loss, memory loss, anxiety and depression, and many other issues.

How can I boost my energy levels?

At The Riegel Center, Dr. Riegel can personalize a plan for your needs. He custom-crafts bioidentical hormone prescriptions using his own proprietary formulas. This balances your hormones, bringing them back in line with your hormone levels from your 20s.

Dr. Riegel also counsels you regarding lifestyle changes to help you maintain your new youthful energy and vibrancy.
